Empowering Educators: A Free Online Short Term Programme on Multilingual Education in India!

In a significant move towards transforming higher education and aligning with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre (MMTTC) at the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM), Kancheepuram, is offering a free online Short Term Programme (STP) titled

"Situated Knowledges: Multilingual Education in the Indian Context."

This highly relevant program is scheduled to run from

August 4th to August 9th, 2025.

About the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre (MMTTC)

The MMTTC at IIITDM Kancheepuram is a Ministry of Education (MoE) funded initiative under the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme. As one of 116 such centers across the country, it focuses on integrating Indian values and ethos into teaching, research, and institutional development, particularly within design and manufacturing education. The center is also actively involved in developing e-learning materials, low-cost laboratory instruction modules, and innovative projects for students and teachers.

Why is This Programme Crucial?

This faculty development program will critically examine multilingual education in India through the lens of "situated knowledges." It emphasizes the educational importance of mother tongue and local languages, advocating for inclusive and context-sensitive pedagogies that reflect India's rich linguistic and cultural diversity in classrooms.

The program conceptualizes multilingualism not just as a linguistic resource but as a valuable epistemic and cultural asset, aiming to equip educators to recognize multilingual practices as tools for equity, comprehension, and the democratization of knowledge. A key aspect of this program is its unique approach to language as situated knowledge, which is deeply embedded in social, cultural, and power dynamics. This challenges existing linguistic hierarchies and validates students' home languages as legitimate and valuable sources of knowledge.

Key Topics Covered:

The comprehensive curriculum includes:

  • The Role of Mother Tongue in Early Childhood Education

  • Philosophical Foundations of Situated Knowledges in Multilingual Education

  • Language, Epistemology, and Indigenous Knowledge Systems

  • Language Hierarchies and Power Dynamics in Indian Classrooms

  • Translanguaging as a Pedagogical and Philosophical Practice
