The Making of Friends

The Making of Friends
                                                             Edgar Guest

Life is sweet because of the
      friends we have made
And the things which in common
      we share;
We want to life on, not because
      of our selves,
But because of the ones who
      would care.
It's living and doing for
      somebody else
On that all of life's splendor
      depends,
And the joy of it all, when we
    count it all up,
Is found in the making of friends.

Conference: ‘Twelfth International Conference on Books

Conference: ‘Twelfth International Conference on Books, Publishing, and Libraries’, USA, November 2014

Simmons College Boston, USA is hosting the ‘Twelfth International Conference on Books, Publishing, and Libraries’ on November 8-9, 2014.

Call For Papers

The International Advisory Board is pleased to announce the Call For Papers for the Twelfth International Conference on Books, Publishing and Libraries. The Books, Publishing and Libraries Conference will be held 8-9 November 2014 at the prestigious Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

SPECIAL CONFERENCE FOCUS:

“Disruptive Technologies and the Evolution of Book Publishing and Library Development”
Change for the better, or change for the worse? New technology in publishing and library science disrupts established literary, academic and business models. How can we assess the impact of a constantly flowing river of change? Will the books or libraries of tomorrow look anything like those of yesterday or today? Are the e-book, the blog post, the app and the tweet just the beginning of a deeper revolution? Will algorithms “think” just like humans in the future when we research a topic or store our narratives and information? Is respect and preference for print and physical libraries the new Luddite view, or is it still a sensible, viable posture in the volatile realm of today’s and tomorrow’s writing, reading, publishing and library science?
The 2014 meeting will feature a special focus on this provocative subject. We welcome open debate, discourse and research from participants that center on this special topic, as well as any other themes or issues relevant to books, publishing, and libraries.

Conference Themes:

We are inviting proposals for paper presentations, workshops/interactive sessions, posters/exhibits, or colloquia  addressing books and publishing through one of the following themes:
Publishing Practices: Past, Present, and FutureBooks and LibrariesReading, Writing, Literacy, and Learning
Proposal ideas that extend beyond these thematic areas will also be considered. For more information about the ideas and themes underlying this community, see Our Focus.
We also offer participation options for those individuals who cannot attend the conference. Authors who wish to submit an article for potential publication in the Book Journal may submit a Proposal for Article Submission, while all members of the knowledge community with an accepted proposal may submit an online presentation to the knowledge community YouTube channel.

Abstract submission has closed for this event.
Note from the conference organizers:
The University of Jyväskylä, Finland, is proud to announce that in 2014 it will host the leading international conference on language in society, SS20. The theme of the conference is Language, Time and Space.
We warmly welcome you here to discuss fundamental issues in sociolinguistics and discourse studies, and not only to rethink our present understanding of these disciplines but also to imagine their future frontiers. Our main areas of interest will be connectivity and trajectories of language resources in time and space; how language practices change, vary and alternate in their different geographical, social and political contexts; and how they come together in different nexuses emerging from what can be called ‘rhizomatic’ circulations.
We are pleased to invite papers on both theoretical issues and empirical findings.
If you have any queries please contact us by email at ss20info@jyu.fi.

Kanthapura

Kanthapura

Rajarao's first novel, Kanthapura(1938) is a well known novel. It deals with the Gandhian influence on the Indian freedom movement. The narrative technique which the writer appropriated from the tradition of Harikatha is the key success of the novel. Raja rao collects the materials for his novel from the history, culture and political movements of pre-independent India. The writer pictures an ideal Indian village, Kanthapura, where the story takes place. Kanthapura is one of the gems of Indian narrative literature.

The Inheritance of Loss

The Inheritance of Loss

The Inheritance of Loss, her second novel, written by Kiran Desai, a grand narrative which encompose the socio- cultural milieu of India and Nepal. In 2006, It was selected for Booker Prize for fiction. The novel discusses various number of themes from love to insurgency of youth. Through this novel, Kiran Desai tries to portray the inherent contradictions of desires of individuals and the society in which they live. This novel excels due to the Desai's endeavor to depict the harsh realities in its true colors with a touch of irony and humor.

Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941), sobriquet Gurudev, was a Bengali polymath who reshaped his region's literature and music. Author of Gitanjali and its "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse", he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. In translation his poetry was viewed as spiritual and mercurial; however, his "elegant prose and magical poetry" remain largely unknown outside Bengal. Tagore introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali literature, thereby freeing it from traditional models based on classical Sanskrit. He was highly influential in introducing the best of Indian culture to the West and vice versa, and he is generally regarded as the outstanding creative artist of modern South Asia.
A Pirali Brahmin from Calcutta, Tagore wrote poetry as an eight-year-old. At age sixteen, he released his first substantial poemsunder the pseudonym Bhānusiṃha ("Sun Lion"), which were seized upon by literary authorities as long-lost classics. He graduated to his first short stories and dramas—and the aegis of his birth name—by 1877. As a humanist, universalist internationalist, and strident nationalist he denounced the Raj and advocated independence from Britain. As an exponent of the Bengal Renaissance, he advanced a vast canon that comprised paintings, sketches and doodles, hundreds of texts, and some two thousand songs; his legacy endures also in the institution he founded, Visva-Bharati University.
Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures. His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and essays spoke to topics political and personal. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced) and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed—or panned—for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla.
