Exploring "North East India in the National Narrative": A National Conference by NEAU

North East India, a region rich in unique cultural traditions, diverse ecological landscapes, and complex socio-political experiences, often finds itself on the periphery of the mainstream national narrative. To address this, North East Adventist University (NEAU) is organizing a National Conference titled "North East India in the National Narrative". This offline conference aims to foster meaningful dialogue and exchange of ideas among academics, researchers, policymakers, and community leaders.

Why This Conference Matters

The North Eastern Region (NER) is strategically important, especially as India strengthens its ties with Southeast Asia through the Act East Policy (AEP), making the North East a crucial geographical, cultural, and economic bridge. This conference is designed not only to celebrate the region's diversity but also to reinforce national integrity through inclusion, mutual respect, and recognition of every region's contribution to India's collective progress and identity. It seeks to highlight the North East as an integral part of India's past, present, and future.

Key Objectives of the Conference

The conference will focus on several critical objectives:

  • Examining North East India's position within India's national narrative.

  • Exploring the region's cultural diversity, ecological knowledge, and indigenous practices.

  • Analyzing the socio-economic dynamics, development challenges, and political complexities.

  • Assessing North East India's role in India's foreign policy and strategic outlook, particularly under the Act East Policy.

  • Providing a platform for academic dialogue and policy-oriented discussions on the region's future.

Thematic Areas of Interest

NEAU encourages interdisciplinary scholarly engagements in the Arts and Social Sciences, inviting papers across a wide range of disciplines including Literature, Sociology, History, Education, Political Science, and Cultural Studies. Key thematic areas include:

  1. Economy, Development, and Transnational Dynamics: This includes traditional and modern economic practices, border trade, economic marginalization, women's role in economic transformation, and the implications of the Act East Policy.

  2. Politics, Governance, and Security: Topics cover political movements, governance challenges, tribal rights, women's participation in electoral processes, conflict resolution, border issues, and exclusionary politics.

  3. Environment, Sustainability, and Ecology: This theme focuses on indigenous ecological knowledge, climate change impacts, eco-criticism, and balancing development with environmental sustainability.

  4. Culture, Identity, and Oral Traditions: Discussions will revolve around ethnicity, identity politics, belief systems, oral histories, women's contributions to cultural transformation, and the preservation of languages and traditions.

  5. Education and Empowerment: This area explores integrating indigenous knowledge into education, representation of the North East in the national curriculum, educational infrastructure challenges, and women's empowerment through education.
