Notes on Translation Studies

                           Source Language (SL) →   Target Language (TL)     

Types of Translation

i)     Word translation
ii)    Paraphrasing or meaning oriented translation
iii)   Sense-for- sense translation  
iv)  Gloss translation – reproduce literally and meaningfully the form and content of the original.
v)  Hybrid translation - a mixing of languages, archaism, neologism, slang, colloquial expressions
vi)   Radical translation – into a language that is either classical or new.  
vii)  Human translation / machine translation – computer/ machine-aided translation.

Problems in translation

i)      The problem of equivalence – irreducible linguistic and cultural differences – correspondence – lexical, grammatical, stylistic. Settle for dynamic or functional equivalence.
ii)     The problem of history or period
iii)    The problem of untranslatability – nonsense rhyme, poesie concrete glossolalia etc.  

 Basic requirements of translation 

ü  making sense  
ü  conveying the spirit and manner of the original - It must echo the original – the intended effect
ü  having a natural and easy form of expression  
ü  producing a similar response

Translation as adaptation – adapting to the local culture, stage, screen, radio etc.
Translation as recreation – poetry
Translation as interpretation – any translation is a kind of interpretation

Methodology

Literal Translation vs Liberal Translation   

Practical translation → ‘minimax’ strategy – minimum effort maximum effect.  

Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774)

Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774)

 In his early life he was known for his wildness and stupidity.
 He was a medical student.  He was a friend of Dr Johnson
 He was a member of the famous ‘Literary Club’
 Goldsmith had criticized Garrick. Garrick rejects his plays.
 Garrick says that Goldsmith “wrote like an angel even though he talked like poor Poll”
 He reacted against sentimental comedy.  His long poem “The Traveller” is dedicated to his brother,  In the essay A Comparison Between Laughing and Sentimental Comedy Goldsmith treats distress as a source of entertainment.

 Important works of Goldsmith are  The Vicar of Wakefield (1766)
 It is a good example of sentimental novel.
 It portrays rural England.  It deals with the story of Dr Primrose and the love affairs of his daughters Olivia and Sophia.  George Primrose’s continental wanderings are inspired by
Goldsmith’s own travels of Europe.
 Dr Primrose stands for his father.  Moses in the Vicar of Wakefield, young Honey Wood in the
Good Natured Manand Tony Lumpkin in She Stoops to Conquer are his own autobiographical sketches.  He worked as an assistant to Richardson.
 The novel includes the famous poem “When Lovely Woman Stoops to Folly”.  The Deserted Village (1770)  She Stoops to Conquer (1773)
 Its central character Marlow is uncomfortable with women of his own class.
 The woman who stoops to conquer Marlow is Miss Kate Hard castle.
 The Bee (1759) It is a serial miscellany. It ran for eight weekly numbers.
An History of the Earth and Animated nature (1774).   It is an eight volume work.
Enquiry into the Present State of Polite Learning in Europe.(1759)
In this work he mourns the demise of arts and culture in general.
The Citizen of the World (1760-61)
The Chinese Letters which he contributed to the public ledger were published together in 1762 as The Citizen of the World
It is written by a Chinaman visiting England.
Good Natured Man (1768). It is a sentimental comedy

In response to the demand of gathering professionals in Education, Psychology, and Liberal Arts, The International Conference on Education, Psychology, and Liberal Arts (ICEPL) 2015 aims to provide a space for academics and practitioners to share the latest researches, case studies, industry surveys, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Guidelines:
Aspiring participants are requested to send their abstracts latest by 5 th of February and complete papers by 5 th of March 2015.

Papers should be in MS Word format, Times New Roman, font size 12 with 1.5 space.
Abstracts would be subject to review by a technical committee.
Abstracts sent after the deadline and/or not accompanied by full registration fee will not be accepted.
The word limit for the abstract is 250 and for full paper 2000 words.
The time limit for the presentation will be 20 minutes followed by discussion.
In addition to these, the following guidelines should be kept in mind:

 Select the theme that best characterises your research paper.
 Theme selections will be used to begin the process of organising presentations into sessions.
  Proposals related to sub-themes other than the ones identified here, could also be considered.
 Papers should be written as continuous expository narratives, not as lists of points or as Power-Point presentations.
 Authors must ensure the accuracy of citations and quotations.
 Papers submitted for publication must be written according to the latest MLA Style and must be thoroughly checked and proof-
 +read before the submission.


Biographical Information should include the name of the organisation or institution in which you work as also the position or title you hold within the organisation/institution and a short statement of your interests.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Literature of the marginalized is a major area of the contemporary post colonial and post modern studies which is very relevant to the study of Comparative Literature. India is a nation where many cultures, languages and religions co exist. This has contributed to the cultural diversity and lives of our people. However, the voices of the deprived and marginalized have been pushed to the peripheries because of social and political reasons. The literature and arts of the suppressed and exploited sections of the society come into the forefront, giving new dimensions to the study of culture.
Centre for Comparative literature, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady is organizing a two day National Seminar on the topic "Literature of the Marginalised: Voices of the Subaltern in Indian Literature" on 10th and 11th February 2015. The proposed seminar will examine the various aspects of the subject. Meena Kandaswamy, renowned Tamil writer, activist, translator and artist has kindly agreed to inaugurate the Seminar. Eminent scholars and writers will be participating in the Seminar.
Contributory papers are invited on the following sessions:
1. Dalit Literature: Works, Criticism and Theory
2. Folk and Minority Literature
3. Forms of Resistance in contemporary Indian Literature
Those who are interested to present their papers should send the abstract of the paper, not exceeding 200 words on or before 2nd February 2015. The title of the paper and author's full address may be given with email address. Acceptance of the paper will be communicated within two days after scrutiny. The full text of the paper to be presented along with a soft copy of the same should be submitted at the time of presentation.
