The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, is hosting a Faculty Development Programme (FDP) titled "Translation as Dialogue: Creative License, Crossovers and Current Developments". Organized by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, this FDP is designed as a workshop to explore a range of issues within translation studies.

About the Programme

The FDP will address the importance of translation in disseminating ideas and knowledge across cultures, as well as its historical role in India's freedom struggle to foster a sense of national unity. It aims to interrogate the evolving landscape of translation studies from an interdisciplinary perspective, considering the connections between history, theory, and practice.

Discussions will cover topics such as:

  • The role of a translator and the debate between faithfulness to the original text and creative license.

  • The value of translation and the gendering of the act of translation.

  • Challenges in translating texts in a multilingual context like India.

  • The impact of new technologies like AI/ML and NLP on translation.

  • Issues related to the preservation of languages.

Eligibility and Registration The program is open to faculty members from any recognized Higher Education Institution in India. Selection is based on the merit of a Statement of Purpose (SoP) not exceeding 500 words, which should detail your reasons for attending, any relevant expertise, and published or ongoing work in the field. The registration fee is Rs 5000 and includes a workshop kit, lunch, and refreshments. Certificates will be provided to participants who attend all sessions.
