Articles for Competitive Exams
Articles are specialised determiners that clarify whether a noun is specific or general. In English, they fall into three functional categories:
| Type | Article(s) | Function | Example |
| Definite | The | Refers to a specific, identifiable noun known to the listener. | "I bought the book you recommended." |
| Indefinite | A / An | Refers to a general, non-specific singular noun. | "I want to buy a book." |
| Zero Article | (None) | Used for broad generalizations, abstract ideas, or plural nouns. | "Books are expensive." / "Honesty is vital." |
Examiner's Note: The choice between A and An depends entirely on the phonetic sound of the following word, not just its spelling (e.g., an hour, a university).
