Exploring the Global Footprint: Call for Chapters on the Indian Diaspora in the 21st Century

With an approximate population of 35.4 million, the Indian diaspora currently stands as the largest diaspora community in the world. From colonial-era indentured labor to the modern "brain drain" of highly skilled professionals, this global phenomenon has reshaped socioeconomic landscapes across every continent.

Seth Soorajmull Jalan Girls' College (Kolkata), through its Departments of History and English, is inviting scholars and academicians to contribute to an upcoming edited volume: Indian Diaspora in the 21st Century: Migration, Policy, Identity and Transnational Politics.

Why This Volume Matters Now

While often viewed as a homogeneous success story, the lived reality of the Indian diaspora is deeply multifaceted. This publication seeks to move beyond the surface, examining:

  • The "Heterogeneity" Factor: Exploring how regional, socioeconomic, religious, and caste identities influence the diasporic experience.

  • Hidden Challenges: Addressing systemic issues like racial discrimination in the West and the "migration" of the Hindu caste system to countries like the USA.

  • Global Contributions: Evaluating the diaspora's impact on literature, scientific innovation, cinema, and transnational politics.

Key Sub-themes for Submission

The editorial team welcomes interdisciplinary insights on a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:

  • Historical & Economic Perspectives: Precolonial mobility vs. 21st-century global talent flows; the rise of transnational professionals; and GCC-specific challenges.

  • Policy & Strategic Partnerships: Comparative immigration reforms in Western host countries and India’s diplomatic partnerships.

  • Identity & Culture: Representation in Indian cinema and literature; themes of hybridity, exile, and second-generation identity crises.

  • Social Justice & Vulnerability: Caste discrimination among the Dalit diaspora; gendered experiences of migration; and religious minority contexts.

  • Education & Spirituality: The role of IITs in global migration and the influence of spirituality on identity formation.
