Ruskin Bond

Ruskin Bond is an Indian author of British descent. He was born on May 19, 1934 in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh. He has lived in Shimla, Jamnagar, Mussorie, Dehradun and London.

Ruskin Bond has a distinct writing style and most of his writing shows a very strong influence from the social life in the hill stations at the foothills of the Himalayas. His debut novel "The Room on the Roof", was authored when he was all of 17 years and published when he was 21. It was semi autobiographical as it was partly based on his life at Dehra in his small rented room on the roof, and his friends. Ruskin Bond was awarded the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957.

In addition to his debut novel, Ruskin bond has also written more than 300 short stories, essays and novellas including the Vagrants in The Valley, A Flight of Pigeons and more than 30 books for children. Other books by the author include The Phantom Rickshaw & Other Eerie Tales, A Face in the Dark and Other Hauntings, The Adventures of Mowgli, Notes from a Small Room, The Rupa Book Of Great Suspense Stories, Too Much Trouble and others. In 1992, he received the Sahitya Akademi award for English writing, for "Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra", a collection of short stories. Ruskin Bond was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 for his contribution to children`s literature. He lives with his adopted family in Mussoorie.
