The Concept Note of the National Seminar

In recent times, special efforts have been made in our country to introduce the study of
folklore as academic discipline. The study and research in folklore are going on in different
ways in India. In this context the role of Calcutta University, Gauhati University and Mysore
University were really praise worthy. Since the post independent period the study and
cultivation of folklore have widely been popularized in different Indian Universities under
different departments. Folklore studies in South India have been enhanced to a great extent.
The study folklore has also achieved a remarkable place in the Eastern region too.
University of Kalyani has taken a lead by setting up a full-fledged Folklore Department in the
year 1990. Developmental strategies in folklore studies have also been taken in North-East
India also. Multidisciplinary co-ordinated approach and synthesis have been devised in this
zone of the country. This venture will add greatly to our understanding of the very important
folk traditions of the Eastern and North-East zone of India and promote the exchange of
folkloristic discourses and we will be able to judge the progressive growth of the study of
folklore and tribal studies as an academic discipline in Eastern and North-East India. It
needs to be emphasized that we look forward to present multidimensional approach of our
cultural heritage.

Established in 1990, the Department of Folklore is one of the few departments in the country
devoted exclusively to the academic pursuit of Folkloristics. The Department is an important
centre of folklore research in West Bengal as well as India. The Department of Folklore of
this University is going to celebrate its Silver Jubilee Anniversary this year 2014-2015.

The national seminar will bring together social scientists/ folklorists/ experts/ faculties/
consultants/ research scholars/ post-doctoral fellows/ students/ member of NGOs from
interdisciplinary fields.

Language of the Seminar

There will be papers both in English and Bengali languages presented in different
sessions. However, the working language of the seminar will be English.

Call for Abstracts

Abstracts are invited for oral and poster presentation in the technical sessions of the
seminar. The abstract (250 words) should be submitted along with completed registration
form to the Joint Coordinators within the time-frame mentioned herewith.

A Two-Day National Seminar on Humour: Texts and Contexts

Eric Jong says,” Humour is one of the most serious tools we have for dealing with impossible situations.” Humour is essential in helping us find and maintain a balance in life and career. However it is slipping away from us. We have become far too serious. Since humour can have a significant positive effect on our lives, it is time we use a little academic rigour to figure out how it works (or doesn’t). While successful humour leads to myriad benefits, failed humour can be downright destructive, from bruised egos and broken friendships to million dollar marketing mistakes. Hence the purpose of this seminar is to study Humour from literary, socio-political, historical and psychological points of view and understand its significance, relevance and varied applications in today’s scenario.

We are inviting research papers on the following themes:

The research paper of about 1500-2000 words should be submitted in font Times New Roman and the font size must be 12 pt. Research papers selected by the expert committee would be presented in the seminar. All research papers will be published in the proceedings of the Seminar with ISBN number.

The Centre for Cultural Studies, University of Kalyani is planning to organize its first UGC-sponsored national seminar entitled:”Negotiating Tradition and (Post) Modernity: Recent Trends in Culture Studies”.

Proposal for paper presentation of twenty-minute duration are invited from research scholars, teachers and academics on any of the sub-themes mentioned in the concept note. The proposal should be within 250 words; must clearly mention the following
a. Title
b. Sub-theme
c. Name of the text/s, its address/es (books, songs, any other cultural artifact)
d. Methodology

Concept Note

In the post-liberal context when the larger academia is being skeptic about the role
of Humanities, Culture Studies attempts to bring within its arena various
expressions of culture as a way towards interdisciplinarity. Erasing the borderline
between the ‘global’ and the ‘local’, there have been trends in the field of Culture
Studies to address the hyperreal world recreated by the network of the electronic
media as well as addressing the expressions of indigenous folk culture. Thus,
Culture Studies operate by debunking the segregation of the academia and the
lived experience of individuals /community. As institutions of higher learning off late
have engaged themselves in retrieving their bond with the rites of the community,
the impact of pedagogy is now reaching out to traditionally marginalized cultures.
Keeping in mind this changing scenario in the humanities, the Centre for Cultural
Studies, a newly established centre of the University of Kalyani is organizing a twoday
UGC sponsored national seminar entitled “Negotiating Tradition and (Post)
Modernity: Recent Trends in Culture Studies” during 28-29 January 2015. Apart
from focusing on the aforesaid issues, the seminar will also focus on the rich variety
of cultural traditions of the Nadia district vis-à-vis the state of West Bengal and the larger national context.

Since the title of the seminar covers a broad range of research and studies, the following sub themes may be considered as well:
i) Electronic Media
ii) Performance
iii) Popular Music
iv) Advertisement
v) Folk Traditions

Registration Fee:

Since the seminar is funded by the UGC, anyone interested in the themes and subthemes

of the seminar are welcome to attend its proceedings. However, to enroll as

a registered participant and enjoy the participant’s privileges, following registration

fees will be applicable. All paper presenters will be required to pre-register in

appropriate categories.
