U G C Sponsored National Seminar The Empire and the Bard of AvonCall for Papers
Sir/Madam
The Post-Graduate and Research Department of English, S B College, Changanacherry is organizing a two-day National Seminar on 25th and 26th of February 2016 on the Topic : “The Empire and the Bard of Avon” to commemorate the fourth death centenary (1616-2016) of William Shakespeare. The department of English with its long history of Shakespeare theatre finds it a fitting tribute to begin the centenary celebrations.
The primary focus of the seminar is on the Roman plays and all that is Roman in Shakespeare as the word ‘Empire’ originally meant. You may concentrate on the three Roman plays, namely, Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, and Coriolanus or on the Roman poems of Shakespeare or even on the influence of Classical Rome in his other works. One of the sessions of the seminar will be dedicated to make an in-depth study in this line.
Another obvious priority is the postcolonial responses to Shakespearean writings as the word ‘Empire’ signifies today. You can choose any work of Shakespeare and come up with a postcolonial perspective of the same.
The third category of research that we expect to happen in and through this seminar is the broadening of Shakespearean scholarship at large. All original studies in this area, including performance, adaptation and translation, are welcome.
Papers from teachers, research scholars and students of Universities and Colleges in India are invited.

Objective correlative
Objective correlative
Objective correlative Popularized by T. S. Eliot (who later admitted his astonishment at its success) in 1919 to explain his dissatisfaction with Hamlet: The only way of expressing emotion in the form of art is by finding an ‘objective correlative’; in other words, a set of objects, a situation, a chain of events which shall be the formula of that particular emotion; such that when the external facts . . . are given, the emotion is immediately evoked. The application to Hamlet now seems fanciful, but as the technical procedure in ‘pure poetry’ the general formula is plausible. The most serious omission is the creative contribution of the unconscious mind. Eliseo Vivas criticized the concept in detail in Creation and Discovery (1955), arguing that a writer only discovers a particular emotion to express in the act of composition. See T. S. Eliot, Hamlet (1919) in Selected Essays (3rd ed, 1951), p. 145.
